  15. <p>An heir to a cigarette fortune portrays a grim family legacy
  16. </p>
  17. <p>    For Patrick Reynolds, 40, tobacco is the root of a small
  18. fortune and the object of a zealous crusade. A grandson of R.J.
  19. Reynolds, founder of the giant tobacco company, Reynolds enjoyed
  20. a privileged prep-school upbringing in Connecticut and Florida.
  21. But in the five years since he stubbed out his last cigarette,
  22. the sometime TV-and-film actor has become a militant antismoker.
  23. Now Reynolds has co-written, with author Tom Shachtman, The
  24. Gilded Leaf (Little, Brown; $19.95), a moralistic tale about a
  25. fortune built on tobacco and dissipated by reckless heirs. Says
  26. Reynolds: "The hand that fed me is the tobacco industry, and
  27. that same hand has killed millions of people."

  29. <p>    Reynolds recounts that his grandfather was hesitant to cater
  30. to the budding cigarette craze in 1911 because he feared that
  31. the smoke from the paper wrappers might be harmful. But when
  32. scientific tests seemed to prove otherwise, Reynolds made the
  33. fateful decision to launch a new brand, Camel.
  34. </p>
  35. <p>    The resulting wealth, says Reynolds, ignited the flames of
  36. family ruin. Despite the author's wooden narration, he portrays a
  37. cast of heirs straight out of Dynasty: wastrels, alcoholics and
  38. eccentrics who became entangled in sordid divorces and murky
  39. crimes. Patrick's uncle Smith Reynolds, a daredevil pilot, died
  40. of a gunshot wound and was deemed a suicide. The author suggests
  41. that his uncle's second wife actually did the deed. Patrick
  42. Reynolds rarely saw his father, R.J. (Dick) Reynolds Jr., a
  43. chain smoker and heavy drinker who married four times and died
  44. at 58 of emphysema.
  45. </p>
  46. <p>    No family member in 40 years has held a major job in the
  47. company, which merged with Nabisco in 1985. The last ties were
  48. cut in January, when heirs sold their stock to Kohlberg Kravis
  49. Roberts, the investment firm that bought RJR Nabisco for $25
  50. billion. In his own small way, Patrick Reynolds has remained an
  51. annoyance to relatives and cigarette makers alike. If his book
  52. is successful, he says, he will donate a substantial portion of
  53. the profits to a lobbying group he is forming, the Foundation
  54. for a Smoke-Free America.
